# Sweden by motorhome

West coast and Lapland roads

Our western neighbour opens up a 450,000 km² playground: Bohuslän's red fishing villages, the cliffs of Höga Kusten and the endless forest roads of Lapland.

Driving a motorhome in Sweden is easy and affordable — roads are wide, the allemansrätten allows free access to nature, and fuel is often cheaper than in Finland. The Vaasa–Umeå ferry is the fastest way across, opening the door either south to gastronomy and archipelago or north to the Sarek wilderness.

### Quick facts

Distance from Ylihärmä

Ferry from Vaasa 4 h, then 0–1,500 km

Best season

June–August on the coast, July–September in Lapland

Road condition

Excellent, tunnels are free

Currency

Swedish krona (card works everywhere)

## West coast: lobster and rocky archipelago

Bohuslän, north of Gothenburg, is Sweden's pride. The fishing villages of Fjällbacka, Smögen and Grebbestad look like postcards, and road 160 winds from bay to bay. Stop in the Sotenäs rock archipelago, eat freshly caught prawns and admire the sunset over the Kattegat.

## Lapland loop: Blå Vägen and Vildmarksvägen

    ### Umeå → Storuman (220 km)

The E12, or Blå Vägen, follows the Ume River inland. Stay overnight by the lake in Storuman and stock up before the wilderness.

    ### Tärnaby → Vildmarksvägen (500 km loop)

Scandinavia's highest road crosses the Stekenjokk plateau (July–October). Reindeer, rapids and total silence.

4. 4

    ### Vilhelmina → Höga Kusten (350 km)

As you descend to the coast the landscape changes into an archipelago of thousands of islands. The Höga Kusten bridge is a sight in itself.

## Other popular destinations

### Stockholm & archipelago

Leave your motorhome at Bredäng campsite and take the metro into the centre — archipelago ferries leave from Slussen.

### Gotland

Ferry from Nynäshamn to Visby, with medieval atmosphere and sandy beaches all around the island.

### Dalarna

The red cottages of Siljan, Falun and the copper mine — the most Swedish part of Sweden.

### Abisko & Kungsleden

Reachable by train, Abisko campsite is one of Europe's best spots for the northern lights.

Practical tips

## How to make the most of your trip to Sweden

- Sweden has over 750 ställplats (motorhome overnight spots) — download the Camperstop or Park4Night app.
- Road tolls in Stockholm and Gothenburg are billed automatically based on your number plate.
- Systembolaget shops close at 3pm on Saturdays — plan ahead.
- Reindeer on the road up north: drive carefully at dusk and keep your lights on.

### Best season

June–September across the country. September's autumn colours and the northern lights in March–April are hidden gems.

### From Ylihärmä

The Vaasa–Umeå ferry takes you to Sweden in four hours. In summer, overnight ferries are the handiest way to travel.
