# Norway by motorhome

Fjords and northern nature

Norway is the motorhome traveller's holy land. 18 National Tourist Routes are designed specifically for driving — every bend reveals a new postcard view.

Fjords plunge into the sea, roads climb steep hairpins and ferries are part of everyday life. In Norway you don't drive for speed — you drive because every kilometre is an event. Expect stunning views, slow days and prices you're better off not calculating every day.

### Quick facts

Distance from Ylihärmä

700–2,500 km via Sweden

Best season

June–August for the fjords, autumn–March for the northern lights

Road condition

Good, but narrow and winding

Tolls

Worth getting an AutoPASS tag in advance

## Why is Norway a motorhome dream?

Norway's roadsides host some of the world's best rest stops. Trollstigen's viewing platform, Stegastein on Aurlandsvegen and Eggum in the Lofoten Islands aren't just car parks — they combine architecture and nature in a way that makes you want to linger.

## Classic route: from Bergen to the Lofoten Islands

1. 1

    ### Bergen → Sognefjord (200 km)

Start at Norway's longest fjord. Take the Flåm railway or a kayak to the end of the Nærøyfjord.

2. 2

    ### Sognefjord → Geiranger (280 km, 2 ferries)

Cross the hairpins of Aurlandsvegen and head to the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord. The Seven Sisters waterfalls are best seen from a boat.

3. 3

    ### Geiranger → Trollstigen → Åndalsnes (110 km)

Trollstigen's 11 hairpin bends are a Norwegian icon. Time the climb for the morning, before the tour buses arrive.

4. 4

    ### Åndalsnes → Atlantic Ocean Road → Trondheim (300 km)

The Atlantic Ocean Road hops from island to island over bridges that seem to rise out of the sea.

5. 5

    ### Trondheim → Lofoten Islands (900 km + ferry)

The long drive is rewarded: Reine, Hamnøy and Uttakleiv beach are among the world's most photographed places for good reason.

## Alternative trips

### Southern Norway: Preikestolen & Kjerag

The hikes near Stavanger are short drives away but unforgettable trekking experiences.

### Hardanger

May's cherry blossoms and the Trolltunga hike — Norway's orchard country at its best.

### Nordkapp

Europe's northernmost drivable road. Midnight sun in June, polar night in November.

### Senja & Vesterålen

The Lofoten Islands' quieter alternative — the same mountains, half the tourists.

Practical tips

## How to make the most of your trip to Norway

- Get an AutoPASS tag before your trip (autopass.no) — all tolls are billed automatically.
- Ferries charge motorhomes by length (roughly the 6–7 m class). On the coastal route expect 3–5 ferries a day.
- Bobil-parkering spots are everywhere, and many include waste disposal and power for around 200 NOK/night.
- Fuel is pricier around the fjords — fill up in Sweden before the border.

### Best season

June–August is the only time all the mountain roads are open (Trollstigen and Geiranger usually May–October).

### From Ylihärmä

Fastest route: Vaasa–Umeå ferry then the E12 to Mo i Rana (about 900 km after the ferry). Southern Norway is reached via Sweden.
